In Honour of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi

People on the move are those referred to as: refugees, asylum-seekers, internally displaced people and migrants - Amnesty International.

19 June 2010 is the 65th. Anniversary Birthday of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmah's democracy icon.

In honour of her sacrifices for the Burmese people, 19 June had become the Women's Day of Burmah ever since 1995.

Today (19 June) the Burmese refugees in Malaysia will congregate at the KLSCAH ( 11.00 am - 3.00 pm) in conjunction with:

1. The World Refugee Day

2. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi Birthday

3. The Women's Day of Burmah.

On the 18 June 2010, Amnesty International Malaysia together with Bar Council Human Rights committee held a gathering for fellow Malaysians together with the children of the refugees in Malaysia.

Refugees have their rights too and entitled to international protection. The Burmese refugees left their homes to various parts of the world.

Malaysians should treat these refugees as fellow humans but not as criminals. They are humans just like us.

Everyday people leave their homes, communities and countries. Some leave because they fear for their lives and the lives of the children.

Refugees' rights include:

- protection from being forcebly returned to their country where they would be at risk of serious human rights abuses.

- protection from discrimination.

- the right to identity and travel document.

- the rights to work, housing and education.

- protection from penalties for illegal entry.

- the right to freedom of movement.

Join Amnesty International and become part of the worldwide movement campaigning for an end to human rights violations.
