There Is Nothing Wrong To Be Gay

The recent video clips on gay men rekindled the interview I had with some gay men from Pink Triangle Foundation two years ago.

For Aswan Ismail, Pang Khee Teik and Peter Ong, they took courage to disclose their sexuality in a positive way. Any gay or lesbian will experience critical time having to decide the disclosure because they are often fearful of negative reactions to the person they are telling to.

The gay men census is difficult to conduct because of too many different sub-groups. They too, are from the marginalised community and in the dire need to be accepted in our judgmental society.

When I was a young boy in the fifties, I heard about man-with-man sexual relations. Boys of our age were easily frightened by our mothers and grandmothers by the threat that we would be the “gone case” boys if we were caught by the man-with-man sexual relation’s man. We came home early promptly every day ever since. That was the way how we were disciplined with fear instead of the truth.

When I was in my teen, I realised that a distant relative was a man-with-man sexual relation’s man (I have not heard about gay man then). He had a family but was always in the company of the same man friend. In my later years, I came to realise that he was a bisexual. He had died since and no one knew if it was from HIV.

You see, in those days we were made to believe in superstitions, myths, folklores and anything “they” could cook up just to put fear for discipline. If there is no line drawn to all these mumbo-jumbo, the present generation has to take years to find out the truth. Anything that should be deemed truthful has to be substantiated with facts or the closest we can get is that what is said should make sense through sincerity.

The fallacy about gay men are highly sexed has to be further clarified. Gay men are normal physically but differ in sexual partner because they choose their own gender. Some prefer cross-dressing but most of them will dress like any male would. Many keep their sexuality a secret, while others may decide to “come out”.

Anyone who proudly identifies himself or herself as gay or lesbian by disclosing such identity is referred to as “coming out”. Such honest gay men and lesbians deserve the respect because they should not be bothered about what people think of them as long as their families knew and accepted them as who they are.

In the Chinese community, having sons are a blessing because they will generate their clan’s expansion with their surnames. Just imagine the bitter resentment when the son’s sexuality is known to be a homosexual. The “losing face” syndrome prevails because the fear that the homosexual son will not have a family of his own; will he be ostracised by the society; will he have trouble finding and keeping a job and the dreaded of all, will he be physically attacked?

Parents of homosexual children be it gay or lesbian, they are struggling with their own acceptance of the fact. This is a real concern especially in a small community where the understanding of sexuality is still paucity. The homosexuals have no choice over their sexual orientation because homosexuality is the true nature that they are born with.

My perception about the attitude the gay men have for themselves is basically their positive way they look at reality. They do not have to mince their words and be pretentious about who they are, but proud to announce that they are the gay men. My vaulting curiosity emerged to the point that I wanted to know how their faculty of thoughts work and how they perceived the heterosexuals.

The ingrained prejudices from the society have to change. There is nothing sinister about gay men because they have done no harm to anyone and their civil rights must be duly respected. The wrong perception of licentiousness about them has to be corrected through education to alleviate the parochial way of thinking about them.

The difference between a gay and a heterosexual lies in the erotic attraction and sexual pleasure between males (unlike heterosexual) which should be accepted as part of the cultural norm.

I feel it is against our conscience if we heterosexuals do not stand by them. We should be supportive by giving them the latitude to live their lives as it should without even raising an eyebrow.

Helping the Mak Nyah Community to Fight Against Violence and Persecution

We are the Mak Nyah community and we are being persecuted by Section 66 on “Lelaki berlagak seperti perempuan” of the Syariah Criminal Enactment (Negeri Sembilan) 1992 (please refer to this section and similar sections in other states in Malaysia in Appendix 1). We have suffered mental distress, physical violence and even sexual molestation at the hands of the religious officers who enforce these laws. We are stripped of a life of dignity and deprived of our personal liberty, and we fear for our lives. We are unable to step out of our homes without the fear of getting harassed, abused or arrested. We are no longer able to go out or to eat and drink in public without the fear of harassment and abuse from the religious officers who enforce these laws. We demand that the religious authorities of the State of Negeri Sembilan and all its officers stop harassing, victimising and persecuting us for who we are.

JUSTICE FOR SISTERS is a grassroots campaign organised by concerned members of the public to raise public awareness about issues surrounding violence and persecution against the Mak Nyah community in Malaysia. The campaign also aims to raise funds amounting to RM50,000 to finance court cases that have been brought up against transsexuals who have been charged in syariah court.

The Justice For Sisters campaign will be launched with a special concert at The Annexe Gallery on Saturday 11 December at 8.30pm. Admission to the concert is RM15 donation. All proceeds will be channeled to the Justice For Sisters Fund.

The Ugly Malaysian Police

Each time a street protest is organised, the police is there in full force to stop what is not in favour to the government. The 5 December 2010 was no difference when the peaceful protesters were fired upon with water canon and tear gas.

If common sense prevails, the police should help the protesters to reach the Palace without any intimidations and it can be over within an hour. So, what's next then?

Iman and Pastor - The Nigerian Experience

24 November 2010.
The auditorium of Tun Hussein Onn Hospital was filled to the brim. People came to hear Iman Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye sharing their soul-searching stories from Nigeria.

What had turned religions to be so hateful that surfaced militias for self-destruction? The way how Christians and Muslims reconciled is truly the Nigerian experience that we Malaysians have to learn from them.

Her daughter raped and husband murdered.

Duta Court. 22 November 2010.

In 2001, Mallika's eight-year old daughter was raped by a gang of criminals. Police reports were made and constantly moving house was to no avail. Despite the police reports were made, Mallika's husband was murdered.

The biting question in the people's mind is whether the police were involved in these crimes and the underworld?

P.Uthayakumar testified and lawyer Sri Devi represented Mallika.

Lets Walk The Street!

Comes 5 December 2010, Selangoreans and the like will hand over the 100,000 signatures together with a memorandum to the Yang Pertuan Agong to buy over the water companies in the state.

The people are expected to gather at the National Mosque before walking to the Palace. Will the number of people turning out correspond with the 100.000 signatures? It does not have to and in fact if 10,000 can turn up it will be one mammoth crowd indeed!

The people must show support for the Selangor government to buy over the water companies for better management and the control of the water tariffs.

Consumers have being paying for murky water far too long. Without water filters, the water through the pipes is unfit for consumption. Just imagine those households could hardly install a decent one, have to make do with what they are paying with their good money.

Like adding salt to the wound, Indah Waters Consortium is waiting like vultures to collect service payment for used water. In another word we have to pay Indah Waters to clean up the murky water as well. We are made to be like “dungus” to be led by a hook in the nose!

Since the Selangor government has time and again proven their ability to manage the state, it is wise to buy up Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn.Bhd (Syabas), Puncak Niaga, Syarikat Pengeluaran Air Selangor Sdn.Bhd(Splash) and Konsortium ABASS.

By allowing the people-orientated state government to buy and merge the four water companies into one, the people have more to benefit and pay lesser. This may not be a reality with profit-orientated water companies.

With the escalating cost of living and the increase in water tariffs on basic necessity like water will definitely “drown” the people with sands.

Where Are You Selvach?

The memorandum of protest to the IGP on the 30 October 2010 was to demand to know the whereabout of Selvach Santhiran.

The peple want his immediate release and whatever crime he had committed should be charged in open court.

A key witness to the death of Gunasegaran in police custody, Selvach had become a victim of circumstances.

Despite a wet Saturday morning, the turn out from the various political parties, NGOs, Members of Parliament and concerned citizens were a unique sight

The police cannot be permitted to continue to operate in an environment of impunity but as this tragic episode has explicitly illustrated, the police has just sent a strong message that they can act as they please with no regard to the rule of law, police professionalism and the law and procedure governing their conduct. Who Got Screwed?

BE IT BARISAN NASIONAL OR KEADILAN
I think you'll get a kick out of this!

A little boy goes to his dad and asks, 'What is Politics?

Dad says, 'Well son, let me try to explain it this way:

I am the head of the family, so call me The Prime Minister.

Your mother is the administrator of the money, so we call her the Government.

We are here to take care of your needs, so we will call you the People.

The Indon maid , we will consider her the Working Class.

And your baby brother, we will call him the Future.

Now think about that and see if it makes sense.'

So the little boy goes off to bed thinking about what Dad has said.

Later that night, he hears his baby brother crying, so he gets up to check on him.
He finds that the baby has severely soiled his nappy.

So the little boy goes to his parent's room and finds his mother asleep.

Not wanting to wake her, he goes to the nanny's room. Finding the door locked, he peeks in the keyhole and sees his father in bed with the nanny..

He gives up and goes back to bed.

The next morning, the little boy say's to his father, 'Dad, I think I understand the concept of politics now. '

The father says, 'Good, son, tell me in your own words what you think politics is all about.'

The little boy replies, 'The Prime Minister is screwing the Working Class while the Government is sound asleep. The People are being ignored and the Future is in deep shit.'

Who Is Childish

Birth Certificates and Identity Cards

It is a crying shame to learn that there are still Malaysians who are still without birth certificates and identity cards.

If Uthayakumar is not helping those who are "stranded" by the system, who will then?

By inferring racism to helping the Indians is definitely cruel in Malaysian context, today.

The deprivation of such documents to any Malaysian born child has to be eradicated.

Why should the government make life miserable for those who are in a dire need for such documents to earn a decent living?

Eve of Malaysia Day

The eve of Malaysia Day saw a group of concerned Malaysians congregating at KLSCAH. They are a small group of "silent majority" so to speak, in which the government surmises to be insignificant.

Pathetic as it should be and by being arrogant, least not knowing that the "silent majority" is akin to a sleeping giant!

For forty-seven minutes in silence, each minute represents one year of Malaysia Day where our political liberty and our rights to speech are suppressed.

Gunasegaran – The Cry from a Silent Voice

The morning of 12 August 2010, at the corridor of level 2, Duta Court, there were sporadic crowd of people at the entrance of their respective courtroom.

As usual, the courtroom where Gunasegaran case was held saw the usual dotted heads from NGO and reporter from the Tamil newspapers.

The atmosphere today at court room 11 was filled with the usual mundane mood except for a few journalists who were present for the submission of Gunasegaran death in police custody after the inquest that had stretched over a year.

The deceased pro bono lawyer, M Visvanathan, emerged from the court room and announced that the submission will be on 13 September 2010.

His inquisitiveness cannot be quenched and his ferocious determination to get to the bottom of it all was beyond words. And wanting to tie up a few more details, new eye-witnesses will be called up to stand in the witness box on the 27 August 2010.

The past inquests proved stark discrepancies in all six police evidence.

Three eye-witnesses identified positively the police officer who had hit and kicked Gunasegaran which resulted in the fatality.

Marks found on the body of the deceased could not even escape from untrained eyes.

Does the date 16 July ring a bell? Of course it does! It is the day that Teoh Beng Hock left to be with god. But people could hardly remember that between a gap of a few hours on the same day, Gunasegaran succumbed to the injuries inflicted on him.

Both their passing was in the hands of the authorities that are expected to perform their job professionally but nay. Their lives vapourized in the thin air and with untold subjugation of physical and mental abuses.

As for Teoh Beng Hock, he was blessed with a job and family, but Gunasegaran was jobless and his closest next-of-kin is his only sister.

Teoh Beng Hock’s passing had activated public outcry, but for Gunasegaran, it was a silent cry.

Renowned lawyers spearhead Teoh Beng Hock’s inquest while Gunasegaran was left to be forgotten.

God is great! He works in a mysterious way and He knows justice should prevail.

Gunasegeran’s sister with little education and financially constrained was left in the lurch. What could she do except to cry out for help because she had lost her only sibling in a cruel fashion.

When news reached C. Sekaran, he desperately tried to reach out to help and was rewarded with an answer. He found lawyer M.Visvanathan.

There are so many similarities between Teoh Beng Hock and Gunasegaran. But unfortunately for Gunasegaran, he was alone.

Are we still blind to virtue and conveniently forget about human values? We are the same human species but shy away from the colour of the skin. This can be a pathetic statement, but say what you like it does not bother me a bit!

When People’s Parliament highlighted the frightening figures -1805, it represents the number of deaths in police custody. Are the figures not alarming enough to scare the hell out of you or to wait until someone you love share the same fate?

Please ponder over it because as a member of the civil society, our awareness counts to the last digit.

Open Letter To PJ OCPD

Arjunaidi Mohamed
Ketua Polis Daerah Petaling Jaya
Ibupejabat Polis DaerahPetaling Jaya
Polis Diraja Malaysia
Petaling Jaya

Sir,

We are writing to you to express our outrage and our strongest condemnation over the brutality and misuse of power by your personnel at the Anti ISA candlelight vigil on 1st August 2010 at Padang Timur MBPJ, Petaling Jaya. The candlelight vigil organised by Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) was held to commemorate the passing of the Internal Security Act (ISA) 50 years ago and to call for the abolition of the ISA.

On 1st August, 29 persons were arrested at around Amcorp Mall Petaling Jaya and IPD Petaling Jaya for exercising their right to assemble peacefully as guaranteed under the Federal Constitution. As the Officer in Charge of Police District (OCPD) Petaling Jaya, your violent and heavy handed tactics in dispersing the peaceful assembly was highly unprofessional and uncalled for. Instead of acceding to the organisers’ request to negotiate terms for the vigil and providing time for the crowd to disperse peacefully, you ordered your officers to move in forcibly on the crowd which resulted in a situation of chaos and fear. In your arrogance, you even denied the legitimacy of the permit given by the Majlis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya (MBPJ) to the organisers.

Violence was brutally deployed when your officers moved in to arrest participants of the vigil. Those arrested were shoved, beaten, slapped, dragged, choked and verbally abused by your police officers. Even women were not exempt from the violence. Such extreme use of violence was highly unnecessary as those arrested would have cooperated when informed that they were being arrested. You exercised your powers arbitrarily and as such, you are to be blamed for the human rights violations that occurred on that night.

In addition to that, we condemn your various intimidation tactics such as deploying water cannon trucks and the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) to frighten the good citizens who gathered outside the District Police Headquarters (IPD) Petaling Jaya in solidarity with those arrested. Vindictively, you also arrested another 3 individuals outside the IPD and deployed traffic police in the wee hours of the morning to summon the vehicles of those who were waiting outside the police station for the arrested to be released. However, we regard the intimidation of the highest order to be your action to compel the lawyers representing those arrested to give a separate witness statement. We condemn outright violation of the right to seek counsel and the rights of the lawyer when representing their clients.

Even though Section 27 of the Police Act provides police with arbitrary powers to allow or refuse permits for public gatherings, this provision is in contravention of Article 10 of the Federal Constitution of Malaysia which guarantees civil liberties with regards to the right to assembly and free speech.

As an OCPD, you should be ashamed of yourself for being a poor example as a leader to the younger and lower ranking police officers under your charge. As a member and leader of the police force, you should be setting an example to the officers under your charge by respecting fundamental human rights in your endeavours to protect the public from crimes. Contrary to this, you have shown not just your officers but the people of Malaysia that you exercise control over the public by inflicting fear and terror.

Due to the above, SUARAM demands that you publicly apologise to the participants of the candlelight vigil, those who were abused by your officers and the lawyers whom you have intimidated. We also urge you not to press charges against those who were arrested as they were merely exercising their Constitutional rights to assemble peacefully.

Like the activists and participants of the candlelight vigil, you are also a citizen of Malaysia. We believe that you would equally benefit from the preservation of the right to assembly and free speech that are essential in a democratic society.

Thank you.

Senior Citizen's Outrage

This is the kind of Ministers we have in Malaysia. Their words reflect their thought process of how low level they are and going after unimportant issues.

Open letter to Sharizat.

APRIL 18 — Many senior citizens are outraged by your uncalled for comments about the RM100 given to them by the Penang state government in appreciation of their contributions to the development of Penang.

Your comments indicate how uncultured you are, totally unbefitting of a cabinet minister. You said you are ashamed and offered your sympathies to Penang’s senior citizens because they are worth — according to your absurd calculation — less than RM10 a month in the eyes of the state government.

Can I ask you how much a senior citizen was worth when the BN ruled Penang? Absolutely nothing, Yes Nothing at all.
You went on to say that you thank God that there is a federal government and a Barisan Nasional government to take care of the people’s welfare without which the poor in Penang will be starving. Yes, the BN government looked after the people of Penang so well that on 8 March 2008, they kicked the BN out of Penang!

As a senior citizen, let me tell you this. It is not the money that matters. It is the thought, the appreciation and the caring attitude of the state government that senior citizens value most.

Did you say that the BN government looks after the people’s welfare? Let us examine the BN’s track record. The NEP has been in existence for almost 40 years and during this period about 1 trillion ringgit was allocated supposedly to help Malays through ASN, ASB and numerous other government programmes involving many government agencies.

Umnoputras hijacked the NEP and by masquerading as champions of the Malays siphoned off a sizeable amount of the funds to enrich themselves, their families and their cronies. These Umnoputras live in palatial houses and live opulent lifestyles. Look at the posh cars they and their cronies drive and the designer clothes they wear while the poor Malays continue to languish in poverty, even after 52 years of Umno’s total dominance in Malaysian politics. How much have these Umnoputras, their families and cronies invested in high-end properties overseas? How much of the loot is stashed away in overseas banks?

A Morgan Stanley analyst estimated that between 1984 and 2003, RM360 billion was siphoned off by Umnoputras and their cronies. The Auditor-General’s Report bears ample testimony to the plunder of the nation’s wealth.

After more than 52 years of Merdeka, many kampungs do not have basic amenities like piped water and electricity while Umnoputras are wallowing in wealth and luxury. No wonder the income differential in the Malay community is the highest among all ethnic groups in Asia.

You were defeated in the last elections and came into the cabinet through the backdoor. We are ashamed of you. No wonder Rafidah poured scorn on you. As minister of Women, Family and Community Development, you did little to genuinely empower Malaysian women, especially Muslim women whose problems — marriage, divorce, custody of children, alimony, property rights etc,etc have remained unresolved. Your failures in this regard are well documented by women NGOs and Sisters in Islam.

You had the audacity to offer your sympathies to the senior citizens of Penang. Let me tell you this: Shut your face, honey. Guan Eng is making money (for Penang, of course), unlike you and the rest of umno gang.

My advice to you is this:

Don’t open your mouth to make a bloody fool of yourself, Do us a favour; disappear from the political scene.

Stop monkeying around.

Abolish ISA Candlelight Vigil 2010

It is a crying shame to see the unending blatant arrogance from the government of the day.

By using armed policemen to combat peaceful protesters holding candles was truly shameful to the core.

How in the world can a peaceful candlelight vigil be a threat and how the participants were subjugated to harassment and the subsequent arrests were too much to bear with. It is sheer lunacy!

The intimidation was evident and the people were not easily cowed. The congregation in front of the police station where those arrested were held was truly inspiring indeed. They made their stand to tell the government that their reciprocation will make a great difference in the ballot box.

By then, what is the government is going to do about it?

Watch the video clips and let them do the talking.

I cry for Malaysia — An open letter from Dr Tan Kee Kwong

To The Prime Minister of Malaysia and the Cabinet,

One month ago, on a Sunday morning after Church, I was driving near Jalan Duta. I was so overcome with emotion that I pulled by the side of the road and wept silently for about three minutes.

What has happened to this beautiful country of Malaysia? How come there are now so many racial and religious problems facing our country? In addition to the outright looting and plundering of our country’s resources and wealth, there seems to be a group of evil people who want to disrupt the peace and harmony that we cherish and have enjoyed so far.

South Africa

What a shining example of progress! We are told that 18 years ago, they ended the terrible practice of Apartheid. Look at South Africa today. They are hosting the football World Cup Finals, and this Sunday, all sports fans across the world will watch them host the final of the World Cup.

In 18 short years, they have erased the practices of Apartheid and made tremendous progress.

Czech Republic

I had a chance to visit Prague in the Czech Republic three years ago. It was a very enjoyable experience. What really amazed me was how they transformed from a Communist set-up and thinking to a very robust Western-style capitalistic economy in 20 years. A very short time indeed.

The US

In the 60s, Martin Luther King was singing “We shall overcome, we shall overcome some day.” Not much later, they had leaders the likes of Colin Powell, Condoleeza Rice, etc.

Today, the US has Barack Obama as president, a person of Negro-African parentage.

What about Malaysia?

After 54 years of Independence, we still have the likes of Datuk Ibrahim Ali, who continue to harp on raw racial issues. Also the former PA of the present PM who in a 1 Malaysia talk in Melaka called Indians “beggars” and said Chinese women like to “sell their bodies”.

To say we are insulted is an understatement, we are incensed! With such racial bigots around, how do we expect Malaysia to progress like the three countries mentioned above?

Allah issue

An Umno friend remarked recently “Why is your Catholic Church so bad that it took the Government to court over this issue?” I asked him to check the facts and background of the issue.

There was no issue until Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar, the former home minister made it an issue. The truth is that The Herald has been using the word Allah in their Bahasa Malysia version since 1982.

This is because many Catholics in Sabah and Sarawak are more conversant in BM. The Editor of the Catholic Herald was warned many times in writing about the use of the word Allah.

To protect their rights, they took the Government to court and won. Then the real problems started.

We remember the call by Datuk Seri Najib Razak and Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein in encouraging Muslims to come out in big numbers after prayers on a Friday to show displeasure about the use of the word Allah.

I want to ask Najib and Hishamudin, since when in this country have demonstrations been allowed?

Also the leaders of the government in waiting, such as Lim Guan Eng, Datuk Seri Hadi Awang and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim signed a joint statement that they have checked the historical records of the Middle East, Egypt, etc.

said there were no problems with non-Muslims using the word Allah. So Umno was checkmated again!

In the recent Sibu by-election, the head of SUPP George Chan, called us gangster West Malaysian politicians.

said “Allah has never been a problem in Sarawak, do not stir up religious emotions here”.

Our reply to him was: “Brother, we did not create this problem, your BN Syed Hamid started it”

Burning of houses of worship in January 2010

This was a black mark in our nation’s history. It started with the Metro Tabernacle Church at Desa Melawati. Today, three Malay youths have been charged for this attack.

many people are not aware of is that God intervened to avoid a near-disaster from happening. One hour before the church was fire-bombed, the Senior Pastor was at the entrance of the church. He had some urgent work and just used his slash card to open the door.

However, God prevented his possible death. Out of the blue, he developed severe stomach cramps, so he returned to his house to ease himself.

I quote from the DPP’s Azlina Radzi statement: “We are not interested in the motives of the accused, but in whether they committed the offence of attacking the Church.”

What a ridiculous remark. How can there be an attack if there is no motive? Unless one can prove that they are insane and fit for Tanjong Rambutan!

In conclusion

Why, after 54 years of Independence, do we still have still so many race and religious problems remaining? Why do we allow a small group of religious and racial bigots to dictate terms and try to destroy the unity, peace and harmony that we enjoy and cherish?

( Dr Tan Kee Kwong left Gerakan to join PKR in 2008. He was the former deputy minister of Land and Cooperative Development, and recently blew the whistle on the controversial depletion of cash reserves at Felda)

Are We In the Awakening or Still In Slumber

The Saying; we are what we eat, is true to the core as far as Malaysian politics is concerned.

The administration that wails political power has surpassed the limit of abuse. The once respected institution to uphold integrity and the well-being of the people is crumbling at a consistent rate.

The present public outcry against corruption has not gained momentum judging from the past public forums which served as “refresher” for the urbanites. They are capable to search and gather information unlike those in the outskirts who depended very much on the mainstream media.

This is the group of people who has been deprived from the truth is stark because of the censorship from the mainstream media. Thanks to the recent increase in petroleum price and the subsequent effect on the daily basic necessity to come, the pinch will tell a different story.

By crying out loud and to compare our wealth from the god-sent natural resources with other countries that have not, has become a mundane argument.

Each day hardly passes by without the shock of the hidden scandal that is brought into the open. Corruption is so rampant that the people are living without one iota of hope that the present government is capable to make a turnaround but to dig deeper into its own demise instead.

Nothing seems to be free from corruption and projects irrespective of its sizes are tainted with scandals. The emergence of political elites amassing huge wealth is uncommon. Has corruption become a way of politicians’ life and nothing can be done about it?

The members of parliament from the opposition party, NGOs and political bloggers should be lauded for their courage to expose how corrupted the government has been.

We should not allow corruption to reign over the people but to uproot it collectively. If the government cannot cease to be corrupted then the people should make it a reality, it has to be home grown effort.

Think about the spending power a wage earner has at his disposal. What about those of the lower income group? I dread to think how they are going to go through daily with so little to spend, let alone to save for a rainy day.

It is a shame that Malaysia is synonymous to corruption because this is, we are what we eat.
